Mr Nick Moratis AM, Tim Martin, Exceed and Excel...it sounds like a perfect recipe doesn't it?
Very smart Exceed and Excel 3 year old filly Smart As has jumped up in class and kept a prefect record to make it 2 wins from 2 starts taking her earning quickly to $38,000 when she won at Goulburn over 1300m and keeping the favourite at bay.
The field jumped in a near prefect line and Smart As from an outside gate, with her winning hoop Blaike McDougall in the saddle, showed plenty of early speed to sit in the one one position by the 750m meter mark and heading into the turn. For there the duo were positioned prefect catch a breath around the turn and then turn in a good position to get a clear look at the straight.
"Entering the straight I asked her for a bit more and she responded positively" said McDougall heading down the straight the filly continued to accelerate and by the 100m with the favourite looming on the outside she lift a gear and jumped ahead to win by a 0.2L.
McDougall (2 from 2 with this filly) was delighted with the run saying the filly would get better with age and showed that she should get over more ground.
Tim was extremely pleased with the result especially for the owner Mr Nick Moratis AM. "I really get a kick out of seeing Nicks colours cross the line first as he (Mr Moratis) has been with me through thick and thin. He has always supported me, given me the pick of his horses and days like this give me the opportunity to say thanks in real terms.
Martin went on the say, This filly is a real trier and puts in the hard yards and her and Blaike are forming a good relationship together that I think will grow in time. Winning your maiden is hard enough and coming out up in class and winning that is even harder. I'll see how she gets on and then look to maybe to a quick backup"
